Amazing Amaryllis―A Holiday Favorite

There are few more spectacular flowering bulbs than amaryllis.  A popular holiday gift, these bulbs are easily forced to bloom inside for the winter or planted in the garden for late winter/spring color.  Plant gift plants outside in early spring and you'll have bulbs for next year!

Over the years, these garden favorites have been bred to produce large-sized, two or more bell- or trumpet-shaped blooms and intense, bright colors.  Since the flower stalks emerge before the leaves, the magnificent flowers are even more accentuated.

Once these beauties finish flowering, cut flower heads before seeds are produced, as it will reduce flower production next year.  Continue growing bulbs in containers indoors or move them out into the garden into a partially shaded spot (too much shade and they get spindly.)  Be sure that the bulb is not placed too deeply, as these versatile perennials will not tolerate too much moisture.  A low-lying spot that will have occasional standing water is a no-no, as rot is sure to ruin your beautiful plant.  Keep the top inch or so of bulb just above the soil line to ensure health.

Bulbs should be well-watered through the first month of establishment, and topdress with a 3-inch layer of mulch to maintain moisture and reduce weed competition.  As the plant grows, you may be blessed with additional side bulbs forming over time.  Leave these to grow and mature or dig to share with friends.  With a little TLC, these bulblets will produce flowers in 3-4 years.

It's not too late to add this amazing plant on your Christmas list, so you can enjoy these beautiful low-maintenance perennials for years to come.
